On June 18, 1946, the Italian flag as we know it today was adopted. The flag is cited in the Constitution, stating that "the flag of the Republic is the Italian tricolor: green, white, and red in three vertical bands of equal size." January 7 of each year is considered "Flag Day," commemorating January 7, 1797, when the birth of the tricolor was decreed in Reggio Emilia.
