The term "Commodore Perry flag" most commonly refers to the "Don't Give Up The Ship" flag flown by Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry during the Battle of Lake Erie in 1813. Inspired by the dying words of his friend, Captain James Lawrence, Perry had this blue flag with white lettering made and carried it into battle. He transferred the flag to the USS Niagara after his flagship, the USS Lawrence, was hit, and used it to lead the fleet to a decisive victory

It was a precursor to the Stars and Stripes, representing the colonies' desire for independence while still acknowledging their Anglo American  heritage.
