The Serapis flag, also known as the John Paul Jones flag, is a unique historical U.S. flag with thirteen 8-pointed stars arranged irregularly on a blue field and thirteen red, white, and blue stripes. It was created in 1779 after Captain John Paul Jones captured the British ship HMS Serapis during the Battle of Flamborough Head. Since his own ship, the Bonhomme Richard, had sunk, Jones needed a way to identify the captured Serapis as an American vessel to avoid being mistaken for a pirate when he sailed into a neutral Dutch port. Benjamin Franklin, America's ambassador to France, is believed to have provided the design, which was based on descriptions of the new U.S. flag at the time

It was a precursor to the Stars and Stripes, representing the colonies' desire for independence while still acknowledging their Anglo American  heritage.
