The Taunton Flag, also known as the Liberty and Union Flag, holds a significant place in early American history as a symbol of resistance against British rule. It was first raised on October 21, 1774, in Taunton, Massachusetts, by American Patriots who had ousted Loyalists from the town. The flag was a Red Ensign, the British naval ensign, with the words "Liberty and Union" sewn onto it. This flag was intended to symbolize both a desire for liberty and a continued loyalty to the British crown, at a time when the colonies were seeking representation and a resolution to their grievances without outright independence.

Relive the spirit of '76 with our American Colonial History Collection of flags.
